Figure 1: Connecvity and trade relavity
Feature Article
by Dr. Venus Lun,
Assistant Professor and Associate Head, Department of Logiscs and Marime Studies
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Shipping is an essenal means to facilitate internaonal trading acvies. Because of its cost-effecve intermodal
operaons, an increasing share of goods is being shipped through container transport services. These shipping
services are mostly provided by shipping lines.
Shipping lines form a network to connect global ports with each other. Lun and Hoffmann (2016) introduced the
concept of connecvity and trade relavity (CTR) to examine the role of shipping connecvity in promong
internaonal trade by suggesng that the formaon of free trade areas will not only promote trade between the
member countries (i.e. intra-trade) but also increase trade with the rest of the world (i.e. extra-trade).
Components of CTR are:
Shipping connecvity posively influences intra-trade: As free trade agreements reduce tariff-based trade
barriers, intra-trade is expected to increase with the existence of trade agreements. Improvements in shipping
connecvity eliminate one of the most important non-tariff trade barriers so that countries can more efficiently
perform trading acvies.
Shipping connecvity posively influences extra-trade: With the growth of intra-trade via economic integraon,
member countries can reap compeve advantages with higher producvity and infrastructure improvements.
Improvement in trade-related infrastructures allows increased linkages with the globe to reach trading partners
for extra-trade.
Intra-trade mediates the relaonship between shipping connecvity and extra-trade: Internaonal trade is
strongly linked to economic development through such mechanisms of capital accumulaon, technological
change, and human resource accumulaon. With the formulaon of free trade agreements, internaonal
trade involves not only intra-trade but also extra-trade. Intra-trade governs the relaonship between shipping
connecvity and extra-trade.

Topics related to shipping connecvity and internaonal trade have received increased aenon, parcularly in
the development of regional integraon contributed to the expansion of trade flows. To improve the shipping
connecvity, Hoffmann, Wilsmeier and Lun (2017) proposed three main policy areas:
Intermodal transport: Increasing hinterland access and facilitang transit are essenal components for the
development of internaonal trade. An effecve way for enhancing shipping connecvity is to improve
intermodal inland transport and trade connecvity by improving cross-border procedures.
• Compeve operang environment: Shipping operaons should be performed compevely. Shippers should
have opons among service providers. Any restricons on transport services will negavely affect shipping
connecvity.
Efficient and modern seaports. Physical infrastructures are important to accommodate ever increasing ship
sizes. Infrastructures need to have the necessary water depth and modern ship-to-shore handling equipment.
Efficient port operaons are also important to avoid delays and uncertaines.
